MiAlgae, a high growth potential startup in the agriculture feed supplement industry, is looking for a driven, proactive Scientific Officer to work in its close knit Edinburgh team. You will use your strong scientific background to solve complex research and development problems with a focus on optimization and cost reduction. This position will require you to work flexibly in a quick paced company that thinks out of the box and does things differently. You will be required to professionally engage with both suppliers and customers. This position will not be not be limited to a strict job description and will see the successful candidate working on a diverse set of problems. This role has the potential to lead to a rapidly increasing salary and equity in a fast growing company.

Job Description:

The Scientific Officer oversees the scientific functions of the company, including basic and applied research projects, as well as the development of new processes, technologies or products. This is position in a startup and therefore combines discipline-specific knowledge with leadership and business skills to promote the efficiency, profitability and competitive position of the company. The successful applicant will be expected to work flexibly and will not be limited to a strict job description.


Company Details:

MiAlgae is a start-up microalgae production company which utilizes circular economy (and nutrient recycling) in order to reduce manufacturing costs. The microalgal products generated are aimed at the agricultural feed industry. We a green company and aim to contribute strongly towards the sustainability of the livestock feed industry. We are particularly interested in the aquaculture feed industry and the production of omega supplements for their feeds. MiAlgae is currently in the process of completing the R&D work required to commercialize our product. The successful candidate will operate in a complex working environment with multiple stakeholders, competing priorities and limited resources.


Basic qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in phycology, microbiology, biotechnology, or related field.
  • Research or industry experience with focus on biotechnology.
  • Understanding of application of performance and quality metrics to drive organizational excellence.
  • Business acumen and ability to drive decisions.


Preferred qualifications:

  • Doctorate (or other postgraduate degree) in a related field.
  • Experience in biomass production through aerobic fermentation.
  • Experience in the aquaculture/agriculture feed industry.
  • Understanding of business processes and change management practices.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Development of experimental procedures required to optimise yields and reduce operational costs.
  • Prioritize new ideas and improvement requests, managing the alignment between demand, delivery planning and budget.
  • Engage with engineering firms with regards to development of commercial production plants and systems.
  • Identify and record all IP generated.
  • Responsible for the direction of all scientific work carried out by the company.
  • Responsible for carrying out R&D work within budget.
