Fermentation Scientist (Manufacturing)

Job Description:

You will be responsible for liaising with different departments to ensure that production targets are achieved, and relevant product QC has been carried out. The successful candidate will be required to manage raw material stocks and ensure that health and safety guidelines are enforced. This position is in a start-up and therefore combines discipline-specific knowledge with leadership and business skills to promote the efficiency, profitability and competitive position of the company. The successful applicant will be expected to work flexibly and will not be limited to a strict job description. This position will report to the Head of Production.


Company Details:

MiAlgae is a start-up microalgae production company which utilizes circular economy (and nutrient recycling) in order to reduce manufacturing costs. The microalgal products generated are aimed at the agricultural feed industry. We are a green company and aim to contribute strongly towards the sustainability of the livestock feed industry. We are particularly interested in the aquaculture feed industry and the production of omega supplements for their feeds. MiAlgae is currently in the process of completing the R&D work required to commercialize our product. The successful candidate will operate in a complex working environment with multiple stakeholders, competing priorities and limited resources.


Basic qualifications:

  • A degree in a related field.

  • 4-5 years of biotechnology experience (academic or industrial).

  • 2 years of industrial experience.

  • Understanding of fermentation processes.

  • The ability to communicate clearly and concisely.

  • Confidence to enforce processes and procedure.

  • Knowledge of GMP.

  • Driving licence (job responsibilities will require travel to our off-site installations).

  • Can do, positive attitude and ability to work independently.

  • Strong problem-solving ability.

  • Knowledge of ISO9001, and ISO14001.

  • A keen eye for detail.

  • Understanding of circular economy and the associated challenges.

  • Multi-tasking and problem-solving abilities with an understanding of quality management principles.

  • The ability to understand the highly complex scientific and engineering problems that MiAlgae will encounter.

  • Strong desire to benefit the environment and do well by doing good.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Ensuring that health and safety, quality and environment policies are maintained.

  • Carry out production runs at laboratory scale as well as on our off-site installations.

  • Responsible for harvesting the product after fermentation and ensuring that product consistency is maintained.

  • Schedule production runs.

  • Raw materials stock management.

  • Liaising with the Laboratory Manager and other staff members to ensure the production process carries on with minimal disruption.
