Production Associate

The Company

Founded in 2016, MiAlgae applies leading advances in science and technology to improve food security and reduce the impact of humanity on the planet. The company aims to eliminate reliance on wild-caught fish as a source of Omega-3 by harnessing the potential of microalgae as a sustainable and rich alternative source. Our zero-waste solution recycles co-products from food and drink production to grow Omega-3 rich micro-algae, returning clean water in the process.


The Role

Reporting directly to the Production Manager, you will work as part of the Production Team and contribute to the successful commercialisation of the company’s Omega-3 product and development of future products.  You will be an active contributor in Team meetings presenting practical results and conclusions, contributing to discussions around standardisation of methods and processes, as well as design of experiments. You will support the Production Manager with site upkeep, development of protocols, preparation of media and maintenance of culture at scale.


Key Responsibilities

  • Assist on production runs, liaising with the R&D Team on lab scale experiments, and supporting on scale-up work at the company’s development site in Balfron.

  • Work effectively across the Production and R&D Teams and between sites to ensure the production process is carried out efficiently and with minimal disruption.

  • Assist with general site maintenance and cleaning tasks.

  • Support harvesting of product after fermentation and ensuring that product consistency is maintained.

  • Support the Production Manager and Lab Manager in ensuring that on site health and safety, quality and environmental objectives are maintained in line with ISO standards.

  • Contribute to the development of production and Quality Control procedures, carrying out administrative duties including COSHH forms and risk assessments.

  • Manage, collate, and report on data.

  • Support the training of Production Technicians and MSc students.


The Candidate

As a young, early-stage company we are looking for driven individuals with a flexible approach to work, who are natural problem solvers and thrive in a dynamic environment. Educated to BSc level or above, you will have industrial experience in a related biotechnology field and a keen eye for detail. You will be an excellent communicator with the ability to work independently and as part of a team. You will have a positive, can do approach and a keen interest in the use of biotech for the benefit of the environment.


 Experience and Skills:

  • Educated to degree level or higher in a relevant life science or bioprocess discipline (e.g., biotechnology, microbiology, biochemistry, engineering)

  • 1-2 years industrial experience (preferred), or collaborative industry-led academic experience, with a focus on biotechnology

  • Strong problem-solving skills, with ability to understand complex scientific and engineering problems.

  • Experience of writing and reviewing SOPS, COSHH and risk assessments.

  • Experience of training junior staff and / or students.

  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely on different levels.

  • Clean driving licence (job responsibilities will require travel between Edinburgh and Balfron).


Desirable Experience:

  • Understanding of fermentation.

  • Knowledge of GMP

  • Knowledge of quality management principles
